South Korea's democratic system is vulnerable to populist inclinations. It is still healthier than expected.

The country is searching for an innovative development paradigm. A Confucian culture that values respect for the ancestors and gendered family relations continues influence society. However, there are signs that a secularist culture is emerging.

Origins

In prehistoric times the ancestors of the modern Koreans survived by hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago they began to cultivate millet and beans as well as other crops. They also raised livestock and even made furs. These people formed tribal states in succession in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also created an industry of metalworking, making bronze tools and later iron ones. They traded with other nations and introduced block printing to Japan and also art styles as well as a written language and paper making.

Gojoseon was established in 2333 BCE on the southern peninsula. The state adopted Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture including Confucian philosophy. Under the guise of filiopiety fathers were accountable to their families and they must be obeyed and respected by all people, even their children and grandchildren.

Goryeo, who would rule from 918 to 1392 CE introduced the world to the Hangul alphabet that was based on the shapes formed by the mouth during pronunciation. This greatly improved the communication between people and resulted in an explosion of the writing of Buddhist texts. Woodblock printing and movable type were also improved. In 1145 CE, the Samguk Sagi or "History of the Three Kingdoms" was first recorded.

Evolution in Korea

The Korean peninsula was inhabited from Neolithic times until. Early evidence of human settlements is evident in the form of cist graves paved with stone, and decorated with valuable items like amazonite jewelry that were buried with the dead. Megalithic structures, referred to as dolmens and built of single large stones, are prevalent throughout the country.

Gojoseon was the first state to be recognized in the first half of 1st millennium BCE. The peninsula was later controlled by a variety of states during the Three Kingdoms Period (57 BC-635 CE) including Baekje and Goguryeo. Moreover, the northern region of the peninsula was occupied by the Balhae kingdom, which most historians do not believe to be a legitimate Korean state.

After the Three Kingdoms arose the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period, or Several States Period. Baekje is the most powerful of these states was weakened by the Goguryeo's fall (676 CE) leaving only its southern regions in Manchuria and the the western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy, prospered for a time.

The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to work together to expand their territories. In the final phase, Silla, with significant Chinese aid, conquered all other states and united the peninsula in 935 CE.

As Korea enters a post-crisis era, its development paradigm seems to be in flux. People who are shocked by the enormous costs of the old systems support a comprehensive program of liberalization of labor, capital and markets for products. On the other hand, supporters of the old system attempt to protect it by promoting nationalist sentiments and by inflating fears about potential job losses.

The academic and policy analysts remain starkly divided as to the extent to the extent that these two developments are driving Koreas development towards an economic model that is radically different from the one of governance. This article analyzes the five phases of Korea's development in terms of its political development that include democratically illiberal democracies (1945-60), democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and participatory democracy (2002). This article also identifies significant factors that may be shaping these processes.

In South Korea, 26% of the population is Christian. Creationists have made progress in promoting their beliefs to this segment. A 2009 survey showed that nearly a third of respondents were against evolution. The success of this event resulted in the creation of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st 1981. The inaugural meeting was widely reported in national newspapers, such as The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and was well-received by the public.

KACR began publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the group published its own activities and published articles on scientific evidence for the existence of God. A KACR success was observed at KAIST University in Seoul. There, there were enough students interested in creationism that they raised enough money and support to construct an on-campus museum with creationist fossil models and other exhibits.

In addition to its activities, KACR has published a bimonthly publication called CREATION. This magazine covers topics in the creation science. It also sponsored a series lectures by ICR staff. It also has a network of local branches, which hold seminars and provide talks to children in schools and community groups.

Evolution in South Korea

In the late 19th century and beginning of 20th, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional hanbok, or Korean dress, gave way to miniskirts, as well as other fashion elements imported from abroad. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by jazz and rock & roll. At this time, the famous samulnori, or masked dance dramas, were popular with the general public. The economic crisis has shaped Korea's new model of development. The new regime's main challenge lies in the proper balance between the state-led economic policies and market-based ones. Established by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established jointly by people living along the Hangang River, those from Buyeo and other areas and immigrants from northern China. In the early 4th century, Baekje was a major regional power, and expanded its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do in the south. It was therefore in constant conflict with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanders on the border.

The decline of Silla in the late 8th and 9th centuries saw powerful local factions to emerge. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as its capital. He was the ruler of a large portion of the present-day Jeolla province as well as Chungcheong. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju. He was a rival to Goguryeo.

His rule was however only for a short time. After his defeat, Gungye was replaced by a powerful local leader Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935. Later, Baekje was peacefully incorporated into Goryeo as a successor state. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened the central government system. This marked the closing of the Three Kingdoms period. The Korean peninsula was then ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually grew to become powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
